Abia State To Benefit From EU-Sponsored Solar For Health Programme 

 

Abia State has been selected as one of five states to benefit from the Nigeria Solar for Health Programme, an initiative sponsored by the European Union aimed at providing solar-powered lighting for Health Institutions across the state.

 

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

 

According to Prince Kanu, Abia state government would provide 30% of the counterpart funding, while the European Union would cover the remaining 70%.

 

“It is important to note that that project is an important one. The provision of solar lights will not just benefit the health institutions but all those that live within the precints of such health institutions“, Prince Kanu emphasized.

 

 

He highlighted that the state government has already installed 4,500 solar-powered lights across 74 locations across the state, with more installations underway adding that the “Light Up Abia” initiative is yielding positive results.

On road infrastructure, Prince Kanu noted that the state government has successfully completed 124 road projects as part of its zero-pothole initiative with a primary focus on Aba and Umuahia.

He announced that the Ndoki-Ukwa East road would soon be commissioned adding that the the contractor is working ahead to deliver the project on schedule.

 

Prince Kanu while noting that other road projects across the state are going on, highlighted that maintenance work have been completed at the Uchenna Bus Stop to Afara Technical School Road and Agbama transformer to F-line Road in Umuahia while Brass junction round about Aba with newly installed water fountain is almost completed.

 

The Commissioner revealed that the state government has obtained approval to provide running costs for the offices of Heads of Schools adding that reform is aimed at addressing issues of illegal fee collection and alleviating pressure on school administrators.

Hitherto, we used to hear stories about illegal collection of fees and so on, occasioned maybe by pressure on the heads of such institutions

 

 

The State Government has gone ahead to ensure that this becomes history and is providing some funds for heads of schools in primary and secondary institutions across the state.

 

This is part of the state Government’s reforms in the education sector“, Prince Kanu stated.

 

He announced that the state is stepping up efforts to ensure the safety and security of citizens by registering commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles and urged operators to comply with the ongoing registration process ahead of enforcement measures.

 

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu and the SA to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma were present during the briefing.
