Governance Reimagined: A Call for Transformation by Governor Alex Otti at ICAN Conference

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State delivered a compelling lead paper at the 54th Annual Accountants Conference organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), addressing the critical state of Nigeria and charting a new course for the nation’s governance. Speaking at the prestigious event held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Governor Otti emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in governance and national responsibility, urging the audience to embrace change and innovation.

In his presentation, titled *Governance Reimagined: Mapping the Future*, Otti reflected on Nigeria’s descent into crises that were once unthinkable—such as the normalization of kidnapping for ransom and economic downturns that have left the country mocked by neighbors. The Governor lamented the erosion of hope and opportunities that were once abundant in the country, particularly highlighting the severe impact on the youth who are increasingly emigrating in search of better prospects.

Otti pointed out the systemic failures in governance that have led to a deterioration in public services, unemployment, and a weakened currency. He noted that poverty has become widespread, with many middle-class families now struggling to afford basic necessities like bread.

However, Otti did not dwell on blame but instead challenged his audience, a mix of accountants, public servants, entrepreneurs, and other professionals, to take action. He stressed that the time had come for every citizen to get involved in the process of rebuilding the nation.

He particularly underscored the role of accountants and professionals in shaping the future of Nigeria, calling for honesty, accountability, and commitment to duty. According to him, there is a need for professionals to step up and participate more actively in governance and the political process to ensure that leaders who serve the people’s best interests are elected.

Governor Otti, known for his reformist agenda in Abia State, also shared personal experiences from his tenure, emphasizing the power of resilience and determination in overcoming setbacks. He recounted his administration’s efforts in tackling pension arrears, improving infrastructure, and restoring security in areas previously plagued by violent gangs.

In closing, Otti called on Nigerians to embrace the new governance paradigm, stating that the only way to transform the country is by creating a culture of community participation in public affairs. He expressed optimism that, with collective effort and unwavering determination, Nigeria can still achieve its potential.
