The Nigeria Police Force has launched a School Protection Squad (SPS) in Ekiti State to safeguard schools, students and teachers from kidnapping and other security threats.
Speaking at the Strategic Stakeholders Forum on School Security and the training of the SPS in Ado-Ekiti, the state’s capital, Lanre Ogunlowo, coordinator of the Safe School Unit, explained that the initiative was developed in response to frequent attacks on schools, which have caused widespread fear among teachers, students and parents, leading to school closures.
The SPS, a brainchild of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, aims to provide a safe, conducive learning environment while ensuring the security of students, teachers and school infrastructure.
Ogunlowo emphasised the police force’s commitment to preventing future attacks on schools and called for support from local communities to achieve the goal.
