The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, currently with Sporting CP, will join United on November 11 after fulfilling his commitments with the Lisbon-based club.
Amorim replaces Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed from the role last month. His first match leading United will take place on November 24 against Ipswich Town.
Amorim has signed a contract that will see him at United until June 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year.
To secure his early release, United paid Sporting an extra €1 million (£840,000) on top of his €10 million (£8.4 million) exit clause.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has been managing the first team on an interim basis, will remain in charge until Amorim’s arrival. It remains undecided whether van Nistelrooy will stay on as part of Amorim’s coaching team.
Reports indicate that Amorim was United’s primary target and the only candidate approached during the hiring process.
Known for his tactical prowess and leadership, Amorim is recognised as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
After retiring as a player in 2017, he began his managerial career at Braga, moving to Sporting CP in 2020. Under his guidance, Sporting claimed two Primeira Liga titles and won the Taca da Liga three times, solidifying Amorim’s reputation on the European stage.
