Nigerian-Biafran civil war was inevitable, Gowon relives experience with details

One of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon has said that the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War was inevitable.

Gowon was Nigeria’s head of state between August 1, 1966 and July 29, 1975, while the civil war lasted from 1967 to 1970.

Speaking during an interview, he said the south-east’s desire to secede made the civil war inevitable.

Further urging the people of the Southeast region to embrace unity, Gowon the dissolution of Biafra followed Nigerians’ acceptance of reintegration and unity.

His words, “I have always said that if there’s no secession, there wouldn’t be a breakout and there wouldn’t be a question of the civil war because it got to the stage that the situation was getting pretty clear that a part of the country, the South-east wanted to secede.”
