The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State issues a stern warning and mandates the immediate swearing-in of Aaron Uzodike, member-elect for Aba North State Constituency, to uphold democratic integrity following the Appeal Court’s ruling.

Umuahia, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has issued a stern warning to the state House of Assembly, mandating the immediate swearing-in of Aaron Uzodike, the member-elect for the Aba North State Constituency. This directive comes after the Appeal Court in Lagos restored Uzodike’s mandate, which had previously been held by Destiny Nwagwu of the Labour Party (LP).

Despite several months since the court’s decision, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa has yet to inaugurate Uzodike. In response, PDP State Chairman Alwell Asiforo Okere, through a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Party, Elder Abraham Amah, instructed the PDP caucus in the state assembly to ensure Uzodike’s immediate swearing-in.

“Abia PDP is convinced that there are no legal obstacles preventing his inauguration,” the statement declared, highlighting that Uzodike received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on December 13, 2023, fulfilling the primary requirement for his inauguration.

The PDP’s directive follows extensive consultations with the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party. The party urged Abia elders, concerned citizens, and conscientious members of the Labour Party to intervene and ensure Uzodike’s prompt inauguration to uphold democratic principles and prevent constituents from taking matters into their own hands.

“We urge Abia elders, concerned citizens of Abia State, and conscientious members of the Labour Party, especially those dissatisfied with their leader’s autocratic tendencies, to intervene and ensure the immediate inauguration of Hon Aaron Uzodike to avoid the bastardization of our democracy,” the statement added.

The PDP’s call to action underscores the urgency of respecting judicial decisions and maintaining the integrity of the democratic process in Abia State. The party warns that further delays could lead to unrest among constituents and a loss of faith in the democratic system.
