Two non-governmental organisations, ‘We Are United’ and ‘Excellent Leadership For Sustainable Development and Good Governance’, have urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise experience, capacity, and compassion when appointing leaders, particularly in the area of humanitarian affairs.
The groups stated this in a joint statement signed by president of ‘We Are United’ Comrade Felix Idowu Tororunju and the executive director of ELSDGG, Dr. Eunice Bosua.
Urging the president to avoid filling critical roles with individuals lacking the necessary qualifications and passion, they said, “Given the current economic realities, Mr. President cannot afford to appoint anyone who isn’t fully equipped to tackle the immense challenges ahead.”
The groups rallied behind Hon. Delu Bulus Yakubu, a senior special assistant to the president, for her remarkable efforts in the humanitarian sector.
They commended her for her patience even when she was appointed at the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA) by Mr president and was screened by the senate, but was not given the opportunity to serve in that capacity, and never relented in carrying out her humanitarian duties.
Despite operating without a budget, Delu has continued to provide crucial support, stepping up after the suspension of former minister Beta Edu and ensuring that vulnerable populations don’t fall through the cracks.
“Her unwavering commitment to humanity, even without resources, has earned her widespread acclaim and several awards,” the groups added, citing her dedication to the less privileged.
Tororunju and Bosua emphasised the importance of selecting leaders who are not only skilled but also deeply empathetic. “The next humanitarian minister must have a track record of compassion, experience, and the ability to lead in these challenging times.”
They further acknowledged the tough circumstances the current administration inherited but called for patience and collective support.
“Fixing the nation’s issues won’t happen overnight. Nigerians must unite behind President Tinubu and give him the time needed to deliver on the promise of a better future,” they said.
