A report released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Nigerians led the African continent to receive U.S. green cards in 2023.
The latest data highlights Nigeria as the only African country to rank among the top 20 nations globally for U.S. lawful permanent resident (LPR) permits issued.
The 2023 Lawful Permanent Residents Annual Flow Report, published by the Office of Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS), revealed that 1,173,000 individuals were granted green cards last year.
Of this, 35.7% were from African nations, with Nigeria securing the 15th spot on the global list. The report underscores the significant role family ties play in securing U.S. residency.
“About 64 per cent of individuals were granted LPR status based on a family relationship with a U.S. citizen or current LPR,” the OHSS report stated.
Mexico, Cuba, and India led the world among new immigrants, with Nigeria being the standout African nation.
In terms of residence, California emerged as the most favoured state, welcoming 205,040 new immigrants, followed by Florida, New York, Texas, and New Jersey.
Demographic trends showed that the median age for new LPRs was 35, and individuals over 65 saw a 62% increase in green card approvals compared to the previous year.
Females were the dominant recipients in terms of gender, while married applicants formed the largest category by marital status.
With many Nigerians gaining U.S. residency, the country continues strengthening its ties with the United States.
As of 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 13.7% of the U.S. population identifies as Black or African American, showcasing the broader influence of African immigration.
