Senate summons Umahi over Neglect of crucial federal road

The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to address the deplorable condition of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho Road.

This summons follows a motion of urgent public importance raised by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai (APC, Oyo North) during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Senator Abdulfatai highlighted the critical role of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho Road as a key link between Nigeria’s South and North regions.

“For over 10 years, despite the federal government initiating repairs, the road remains in disrepair,” Abdulfatai said, expressing concern over the daily hardships travellers face.

He noted that many travellers are stranded due to the road’s poor state, and accidents and gridlocks have become frequent, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles.

The Senate unanimously backed the motion, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio directing the Senate Committee on Works to investigate the issue further. The committee has been tasked with reporting back to the Senate within three weeks.

Minister Umahi is expected to appear before the committee to provide explanations for the long-standing abandonment of substantial sections of the road.
