The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has attributed the frequent industrial actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to the challenges of funding public universities in Nigeria.

Speaking during a pre-convocation lecture at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, themed “Challenges of Funding Public Universities in Nigeria: Pathways for Sustainable Tertiary Education,” Uzodimma represented by his commissioner for Higher Education Chike Nwadike explained that while federal universities once enjoyed 100% government subsidy.

He noted that the increase in the number of universities has strained government resources.

Governor Uzodimma disclosed that although the creation of more universities has improved access to education, the Federal Government can no longer sustain their funding.

He emphasized that the primary source of funding for most Nigerian universities remains government allocations, which are currently insufficient.

The Imo State governor called on universities to explore internal revenue generation, particularly through research, to fulfill their mandates of teaching, research, and community service, despite support from TETFund.
