Why I participate in elections – 87-yr-old grandmother

An 87-year-old grandmother, Mrs Abigail Awogbemi, who trekked 3 kilometers to cast her vote in last Saturday’s local government election in Kwara State has said she has been participating in elections because of the future of her children.

The octogenarian, who voted at Polling Unit 10, Adetounwa, Okaka 1, Taiwo Isale, told Daily Trust that she had been voting since the first election in Nigeria.

She expressed optimism that one day, the situation of the country would change for the better, adding that she doesn’t benefit from the political leadership after the elections.

Mrs Awogbemi, however, said she would continue to vote for as long as she lives.

She said, “I trekked from Gaa Akanbi to Taiwo Isale in Ilorin to vote because this used to be my area before I relocated following the sale of the place by the landlord.”

“I am voting because of my children. If the situation improves, my children will benefit from it. But personally, despite all my sacrifices during the election period, I don’t get the benefit directly from the process, they don’t remember me.

“But as long as I am alive and healthy, I will continue to vote. The authorities restricted vehicular movement during the election hours and there was no vehicle, so I decided to trek this long.

“I hope to see good governance in the future that will benefit my children and everybody. That has been my motivation and interest.”
