Member representing the South-East on the Governing Board of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has stressed the need for the third tier of government; the local Government councils to be empowered and allowed to function independently as this would contribute to driving down democracy dividends to the grassroots as well as help tackle issues of insecurity and unemployment in Nigeria.

Speaking during a television interview, the former House of Reps Member for Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency commended the 10th National Assembly for embarking on a fresh bid to revisit sections of the 1999 Constitution in order to make it more people oriented especially as it concerns allowing the Local governments to function optimally and independently.

The NEDC Board Member who doubles as the Chairman of the Committee on Security, Climate Change, and Special Interventions on the Board recalled that between 1999 to 2002 Local Government Chairmen embarked on far reaching projects to develop their areas of jurisdiction stressing that the reverse is the case now as that tier of government is almost existing on paper.

Onuigbo expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu would call the Governors together to address the issue in order to take governance to the grassroots, for the overall good of the country.
